History of Helping Others
The roots of Teva Canada Innovation are traced to the research of Professor Michael Sela, Professor Ruth Arnon and Dr. Dvora Teitelbaum of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Their quest for drug therapies for autoimmune diseases led to the development of a treatment for Multiple Sclerosis. Known as Copolymer 1 (glatiramer acetate), the compound was found to alter the natural course of the disease. This was the first step toward the agreement which led Teva to develop and commercialize the product now known as Copaxone®.
Teva Canada Innovation originated in 1997 as Teva Marion Partners, a strategic alliance between Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Hoechst Marion Roussel, now sanofi-aventis Canada Inc. The partnership was created to market Copaxone®.
In 2001, Teva Marion Partners became a wholly owned subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. The division merged with the parent company’s innovative North American clinical research group, adding for the first time a research and development function. The new company became known as Teva Neuroscience, and was responsible for the development, registration and marketing for all Teva Pharmaceutical Industries branded products in North America. In 2010, the company adopted the name Teva Canada Innovation to better reflect its increasingly diversified portfolio of products.
Today, Teva Canada Innovation continues to strengthen its Canadian presence and is well-positioned for growth. In Canada, our presence includes headquarters located in Montreal (Quebec), where all administrative, marketing and other leadership functions are based, as well as a sales force spread out across the country.
